How Do I Sign Up for Cryonics? A Step-by-Step Guide to Enrolling with Saka Cryo

Process

It's More Straightforward Than You'd Expect

Most people assume signing up for cryonics involves some byzantine process — exotic medical procedures, strange contracts, long waiting periods. The reality is much more ordinary. Enrolling with Saka Cryo is primarily an exercise in insurance and paperwork, and while there are a few moving parts, none of them are especially complicated. Here's what the process actually looks like.

Step 1: Choose Your Funding Method

Cryonics preservation is typically funded through a life insurance policy, which pays out to Saka upon your death to cover the cost of preservation and fund your cold trust. The two main options are term life insurance and Guaranteed Universal Life (GUL).

Term life is the more accessible entry point. It's affordable, widely available, and there are no-exam options for those who may not qualify for traditional underwriting. It's a solid choice if you're exploring cryonics or working within a budget. The downside is that term coverage expires — if you outlive the policy period, you'd need to renew or switch.

GUL is what Saka recommends for committed members. A Guaranteed Universal Life policy provides a guaranteed death benefit that doesn't expire, regardless of when you die, at the lowest possible long-term premium. Unlike whole life insurance, GUL isn't designed to accumulate cash value — it's built around one job: delivering the death benefit. That makes it the most efficient long-term funding vehicle when the goal is making sure Saka gets paid, whenever that day comes.

Saka's insurance experts will walk you through policy options and helps you find coverage that fits your situation.

Step 2: Complete Medical Underwriting

Once you've selected a policy type, you'll go through the insurance company's underwriting process. For no-exam term policies, this is minimal — mostly a health questionnaire. For GUL and traditionally underwritten policies, there may be a medical exam involved. This step is handled through the insurer, not Saka directly, and the specifics depend on the policy you choose.

Step 3: Execute the Legal Documents

This is the heart of the enrollment process. Two key documents need to be in place:

First, an advance directive that names Saka Cryo as the authorized organization to take custody of your remains and carry out your preservation wishes. This document is what gives Saka legal standing to act on your behalf after death — without it, hospitals and family members may not be able to release your body to the team.

Second, an assignment of your insurance policy to Saka, so the death benefit flows directly to the organization rather than requiring your estate to transfer funds after the fact. Speed matters in cryonics, and removing financial friction from the post-death process is part of the design.

Step 4: Get Your Paperwork in Order

Once your documents are executed, Saka will provide you with a wallet card and medical ID that identify you as a cryonics member and include emergency contact information for Saka's response team. These materials are meant to travel with you — in your wallet, with your medical records, wherever relevant people might encounter them in an emergency. You will also have a digital version on the mobile app and available in your digital wallet.

The goal is simple: if something happens to you unexpectedly, the people who find you need to know to call Saka immediately. Every minute of delay matters, and these materials reduce the chance that responders won't know what to do.

Step 5: You're a Member

That's it. With your insurance in place, your legal documents executed, and your emergency materials distributed, you're enrolled. You don't need to do anything else to maintain your membership in normal circumstances — Saka will respond when the time comes.

That said, if your health situation changes significantly, reach out to Saka so that standby arrangements can be made in advance. The enrollment process gets you set up; keeping Saka informed as life evolves is what makes the response as effective as possible.
